“Maha”jan?

A lot was made of Pramod Mahajan’s death recently. One of the top functionaries of the Bhartiya Janata Party and he maintained a high profile ever since his ‘rath yatra’ days with Advani. His meteoric rise to national level politics from a humble back ground was the stuff dreams are made of – the typical rags-to-riches story. What was intriguing was the way he went – shot by his brother four times and struggling for life for days after. What could have caused his brother’s precipitate action? Perhaps Pravin was not in the best frame of mind and he may have misused his brother’s clout for personal ends. There are two things that trouble me. One: could this have been a well planned conspiracy? Did perpetrators use Pravin to eliminate his politician-brother? Was he cultivated over a period of time to commit this heinous crime?
Two: an attempted murder in cold blood surely has a lot to it than meets the eye… was it merely jealousy that drove Pravin to kill Pramod?
The first is in view of the fact that our august bodies are occupied by old doddering men and the leaders like Mahajan, Pilot, Scindia who passed away were 50+ Where are the “young” charismatic leaders disappearing?
The media went berserk covering the story and every minor detail was reported in the press. Inevitably as happens so often a little hype goes a long way… he was glorified and deified all around. But did he squarely deserve the praise heaped upon him?
He was given credit for facilitating the telephony revolution in India during his tenure. But his dubious association with a leading business house and rumors of vested interests in that company – which is why many policies seem to have favored them – are glossed over. So does he deserve the “maha” nomer truly? It literally means “great”… well; he was young and dynamic and probably had a long fruitful career ahead of him. But I am of the opinion that as a politician he did nothing spectacular, I don’t think he left a legacy of any sort. He was just another politician – he rose to the top in a calculated manner, was good at managing the media, suave and sophisticated in his ways, but other than that he draws a blank. What is worse is that the party wanted his wife to be elected in his place! How a housewife could qualify for the position overnight beats me.
